Whether you are travelling through Thailand with just a backpack or are an expat wanting a weekend getaway from your Thai condo, use this list to find the most unique, fun, interesting and romantic things to do in Thailand for Valentines Day.
Valentines Day happens to be one of the most widely celebrated holidays in Thailand, and as it falls over a long weekend this year there’s no better time to take a romantic getaway. With Thailand’s beautiful and diverse scenery, there are many places throughout the country that will make the perfect romantic setting for any couple.
Float through Fireflies in Koh Chang
This picturesque island, located in the gulf just west of the Cambodian border is known to have several waterfalls, thriving coral reefs and lush rainforests. While these elements alone make Koh Chang a romantic destination, what makes the island extra special is the abundant mangrove area of the island; an area that thousands of fireflies call home.
For a special Valentine’s activity, rent a private boat for a few hours starting at 5pm to watch the sun go down from the water. Share a bottle of champagne or a dessert while you wait for the night to set in, then float through the mangrove trees to be surrounded by the flickering fireflies around you and the stars above you.
Phosphorescence in Phang Nga Bay
Straddled by the famous beaches of Phuket and Krabi is Phang Nga Bay, which offers visitors some of the most beautiful scenery in all of Thailand. Spend a relaxing Valentines Day in the sun by sailing around the nearby islands to find a secluded beach or take a tour to the more popular beaches, including the famous James Bond Island. Enjoy a leisurely dinner and a fire show, or take a sunset cruise as you wait for sky to darken. Once night falls, set out in a kayak built for two to watch the ocean glisten and sparkle with the condensed bioluminescent phytoplankton/ phosphorescent plankton. The microorganisms emit light in response to stress so you can see them glow every time your paddle touches the water; even more so if you go for a little swim.
Mae Hong Son and the Mountains Near Myanmar
If you’re looking for a unique or more cultural alternative to a beach excursion, head to the remote village of Mae Hong Son, located in the far north-west of Thailand, right on the border of Myanmar. Here you can enjoy the mountainous scenery, explore “long neck” tribal villages, and take a stroll through Pang Tong Palace.
To get to Pang Tong Palace you must follow a steep and winding road through the mountains; a drive which will take you about an hour from Mae Hong Son town. The palace is high on the mountain and offers spectacular views of the misty mountains, gorgeous flower gardens, colourful fruit orchards, and wandering animals including sheep and pheasants. That evening, spend the rest of your Valentines Day enjoying some alone time in one of the regions many hot springs.
Wine and Dine in Khao Yai
For a Valentines Day date that doesn’t require hiking shoes or a bathing suit, the region of Khao Yai, located just a few hours east of Bangkok has a number of wineries that offer vineyard tours and tastings. Three of the best vineyards include PB Valley, Village Farm and Grant Monte, and they’re all close enough to each other that you can easily visit them in one day. Top off your romantic Valentines Day of delicious wine and beautiful scenery with a candlelight dinner and a comfortable hotel.
Lampang: The Least Cliché Horse Carriage Ride
Lampang, located less than two hours from Chiang Mai, is a provincial town with ancient temples, relaxing riverside bars and restaurants and friendly locals. During the day, take an excursion to the Thailand Elephant Conservation Centre, the oldest and only government sponsored elephant centre in Thailand to see the King’s white elephants and their demonstrations. In the evening, head back to Lampang town, which happens to be the only town in Thailand that still offers horse and carriage rides. While this may be considered cliché in other countries, it’s not in Thailand. This local mode of transportation is a fun and relaxing way to spend the evening snuggled up next to your Valentine while exploring a new place.
