'Tis the Season: Xmas Shopping in Bangkok

Whatever you have on your Christmas shopping list, Bangkok has it. Few cities in the world can lay claim to having such a diverse range of places to splash the cash. From modern mega-malls to long-established local markets, it’s easy to spend, spend, spend in the Thai capital this holiday season.

Chatuchak

Chatuchak weekend market has literally everything under the sun, with a staggering 8,000 stalls selling handicrafts and local designer clothing to antique furnishings, gardening tools and exotic pets. This maze of a market would take a lifetime to explore – but you’ll quickly discover that there is something for everyone. Unsurprisingly, Chatuchak gets incredibly busy so it’s best to arrive early and avoid the crowds.

Bangkok Flower Market

Situated along the Chao Phraya River, the Bangkok Flower Market (aka Pak Khlong Talad) is the largest fresh flower market in the city and it stays open 24 hours a day. Flowers are delivered daily from flower-growing areas across the country and the market teems with vibrantly coloured lilies, roses, orchids, tulips, marigolds and countless other varieties. Pick up some seasonal blooms to brighten up your space, or as a festive holiday gift for that special someone.

Or Tor Kor

For something different, head to the sprawling indoor market of Or Tor Kor, where you’ll arguably find the finest produce and food items in all of Thailand. Fresh seafood and meats, huge amounts of local vegetables, a bounty of ripe fruit and all manner of cooking condiments make this a must-visit venue — especially if you’re looking for a unique gift to impress the foodie in your life.

Siam Centre

Need a more edgy gift? Global designer stores and trendy Thai brands fill this oh-so-swish mega-mall. Officially Thailand’s first shopping centre, Siam Centre underwent a THB 1.8 billion facelift in 2012 and looks all the better for it. Boasting four floors of fashion outlets, salons, beauty retailers and a dedicated sports and outdoor gear section, it’s the epitome of Bangkok’s modern shopping mall experience.
