One of Thailand’s biggest developers has acquired the old site of the Australian Embassy.
The former site of the Australian Embassy has been sold. The winning bid of THB 4.6 billion was by Supalai Public Company Limited (Company). A Thai property developer that started its journey in building residential and commercial buildings in 1989. Today, it has moved on from its beginnings focusing solely on gated developments of townhouses and detached houses, and has expanded its portfolio into condominiums, commercial space, hotels and resorts.
Put on the market just six months ago, the site was home to Australian’s fourth-largest diplomatic mission over the last 40 years. Situated on South Sathorn Road with an exit also on Suan Phlu Road, the seven rai and 382 square wah site naturally generated a lot of interest. Supalai intend to develop the site into a THB 17 billion property project consisting of condominiums as well as office space. The developer has expressed their intentions to preserve some of the trees that are on the site.
The home of the new embassy which opened its doors at the end of July is at 181 Wireless Road. Located closeby to Lumphini Park as well as other embassies that include Japan, America and the Netherlands, the new site is also home to the Ambassador’s residence. Designed to emulate the Australian landscape with red brick that takes influences from both Australia and Thailand. The colour and shape is said to be similar to that of Australia’s Uluru, or Ayers Rock, but the look has been achieved using a traditional Thai brick that is regularly used as part of the construction of Thai Temples.
This recent transaction adds to the list of other former embassy sites sold in Bangkok that includes part of the site of the British Embassy and the former French Embassy also situated on Sathorn Road.
