The Thai government has announced it will test run the MRT Purple Line from Bang Yai to Tao Pun starting next month.
Major General Sansern Kaewkamnerd, a government spokesperson, said the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) will conduct a test run of the MRT Purple Line extension next month before the commercial run will officially commence in August.
The MRT Purple Line is the first route which connects Bangkok with its outer suburbs, and will help alleviate traffic congestion between Bangkok and Nonthaburi. It covers approximately 23 kilometers, and features 16 elevated stations, four park and ride buildings, and one maintenance centre.
When fully open the new rail system is expected to accommodate up to 120,000 passengers a day. The fares will be between THB 14 and THB 42 per ride depending on the distance.
Free rides will be offered to members of the public in June and July.
