Koh Samui’s clear crystal waters and soft white sand are a sun-worshipper’s mecca but what are the travel options to reach this Thai gem?
The rainy season is in full swing in Bangkok. For some, the sudden downpours are a respite from the heat, for others it is an excuse to get away. Koh Samui experiences a different weather pattern to Bangkok. It has some of its best sunshine mixed with only a few, short showers during Bangkok’s wettest months from June to August making it the ideal retreat for those wanting to soak up paradise.
Bangkok is a transport hub for getting around the Kingdom. So what are the options for getting to this world renowned island? Choose one of the following depending on your time, budget and level of adventure!
By air
Just one hour from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport and you have landed on one of Thailand’s most established islands. Met at the plane by a cute toy train that takes you to the picturesque and small terminal adorned with flowers, you will instantly know you have landed in paradise. Easily the quickest and most welcoming way to arrive to the island.
But if your pockets do not quite stretch to a direct flight, then consider a no frills route. Fly to Surat Thani on the mainland, and as part of your ticket price you can select a transfer by road before meeting the boat to complete your journey.
By sea
Donsak is the main pier on the mainland for onward travel to Koh Samui. Depending on how much time you have to play with, you can hop on a catamaran to be on Samui’s sandy shores in 45 minutes. Longer journeys are available on the slower boats at a lower cost, which can take up to five hours.
By train
If the journey reaching your destination is part of the adventure, why not take the train? Departing from Bangkok at 6 am and 12:30 pm the train takes approximately 13.5 hours. Watch the country roll past, dine on board and mix with locals – this really is the way to experience travel in Thailand. Jump off the train at Surat Thani to board a boat to make the final leg to this dazzling island with extra money in your pocket to spend at the bar!
