We first turn to coloring – often the most striking aspect of any room. The country look is popular, given its welcoming, earthy shades such as crimson, teal and beige. When combined with classic or contemporary décor, it grants a natural glow to any house or condo. Also, golden hues instantly impart a sense of show and glamour.
Shades of blue and green are well suited for all decorating styles, as they are soothing and complementary colors. Many interior designers prefer to go with muted shades that blend with each other rather than stand out on their own. For a unified look across all rooms, it’s often effective to use different shades of the same color.
Floral patterns of all kinds generally reflect a traditional rural theme, but they can be modified to suit contemporary sensibilities. Floral fabrics can either create a soft and accommodating feel, or make a bold statement. Use them on chairs, linens, window treatments or wallpaper, balancing the look of the room with subtle checked or striped patterns.
To add softness to a room, employ gentler lightweight fabrics, and avoid heavy materials such as leather and polyester. Long curtains hanging over the windows, slightly draped over the floor while tied to the side, gives any space a soft touch. In the bedroom, you can hang fabric over the bed canopy for a more romantic look. Cushions also add a soft (and comfy!) touch to beds, chairs, sofas and floors. Rugs are another way to introduce soft character to the room.
Lighting is also very important when you add warm colors to the room: it’s often best to incorporate lots of natural lighting or lamplight into your décor whenever possible. Plants also give a sense of tropical splendor while adding a relaxing touch.
Play around with a few looks, and see what works for you and your home. Have some fun and when in doubt, go with your intuition – in the end, what matters is that your living space both looks and feels good.
