Ready for some R&R this holiday season? Thailand offers a number of wonderful beaches for relaxation and exploration, with interesting sights, delicious food and great hospitality. Here are some great beach destinations not too far from Bangkok by road.
Pattaya:
A 1.5 hour drive southeast of Bangkok, this once tiny fishing village has developed into a renowned international resort and playground. Pattaya offers every lifestyle attraction, from golf, horseback riding and watersports to malls, restaurants and an infamous nightlife scene.
Huahin:
About a 2.5 hour drive from Bangkok, Huahin exudes a retro vibe amid every modern lifestyle option. It offers a long stretch of soft sand beach, fresh seafood, colourful markets and plenty of activities, from golfing and kite surfing to water parks and wine tasting.
Cha-am:
Located in Petchaburi province, right before Huahin, Cha-am offers a quiet, relaxed beach without the
hassle of beach vendors; great open-air seafood restaurants; and a mellow, nostalgic charm. However, modern amenities can be readily found, co-existing with traditional markets and historic palaces.
Pranburi:
About thirty minutes south of Huahin, Pranburi is ideal for those looking for a relaxed, quiet area (with no nightlife). The town offers many lovely boutique hotels on the beach, which is popular for kite surfing and other water sports. Pranburi also houses the Khao San Roi Yot National Park, offering beach and mountain nature trails.
Rayong:
Some 180 kilometres from Bangkok, Rayong is another great seaside getaway, with an extensive coastline; quiet beaches, including those of Mu Koh Samet National Park; and scenic waterfalls. The area’s fertile lands produce an abundance tropical fruits. Rayong is also famous for its shrimp paste, fish sauce and dried seafood.
Ko Samet:
Fringed by powdery sand beaches, Samet provides the setting for an idyllic escape. Part of a national park, the isle is accessed via ferry or private speedboat from Rayong piers. Hat Sai Kaew and Ao Vong Duan are the most popular beaches, housing low-key bungalows, and lively restaurants and bars.
