More than 2,000 people have already applied for home loans under the Thai Government’s measures to assist low- and middle-income people with their property purchases – with the value already reaching a fifth of the total announced by the government last week,

The President of the Government Housing Bank (GHB), Angkana Pilanowat Chaimanus (pictured), said the mortgages requested on Monday reached a total of THB 2 billion and the value of properties ranged from THB 800,000 to THB 2 million.

She said the bank expects that the total amount of home loans requested each day would reach THB 1 billion and the THB 10 billion budget for this home loan scheme would be spent within the next two months.

Last week Dot Property Group estimated that less than 3,500 people would be helped by the scheme if the maximum THB 3 million mortgage amount was fully utilised.

It takes three days for GHB to consider whether to approve the loan and two weeks to consider whether to increase the value of the new mortgage.

The bank said that it will compile information about home loan applications nationwide and propose that the government expand the scheme if demand for home loan is still high.
